MOTD: 081816 US Pipeline Accidents – Hazardous Liquids From 2010 – 15 and > 500 Barrels

There have been 2,577 pipeline accidents involving hazardous liquids in the US in the years from 2010 to 2015, according to data published by the U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration. Of those accidents, 148 involved the unintentional release of hazardous liquids in excess of 500 barrels. For reference, one barrel equals 42 US gallons.

Some data highlights/lowlights:

  • The largest accidental spill, the result of a ruptured pipeline, was 30,565 barrels (1,283,730 US gallons) of ethane on January 26, 2016 near Colliers, West Virginia.
  • The incident with the largest cost in terms of the value of the commodity spilled was a 2013 accident in North Dakota:  20,600 barrels of crude oil valued at $1,417,839.
  • The July 2010 rupture of a pipeline that spilled 20,000 barrels of heavy crude into Michigan’s Talmadge Creek and the Kalamazoo River had an estimated $635,000,000 for clean up costs.
